Stop! You're Hurting Your Eyebrows
Worried that you’ve been mistreating your brows? Don’t let your bad behavior get in the way of growing gorgeous eyebrows. Learn how cutting-edge technology works with your natural hair growth cycles as well as which beauty practices you need to stop doing now!
So, How Do Your Eyebrows Grow?
Understanding the growth cycle of your eyebrows can help explain how external and internal factors can affect them so that you can adopt your beauty care regimen accordingly and take appropriate care of your precious hairy caterpillars to ensure longevity.
- Anagen - Also known as the ‘Growth’ period, this lasts for around 2-3 months. Because this is the crucial stage where hair length and condition will be determined, most brow serums will focus on this phase when formulating their products.
- Catagen - Referred to as the ‘Transition’ period, this stage usually lasts about 2-3 weeks. During this time hair is cut off from the blood supply and growth stops.
- Telogen - Is the ‘Rest’ period, and usually lasts about 3-5 months. During this time hair will gradually shed.
Each eyebrow follicle is on its own growth cycle and will therefore experience different phases at any given time. This is a relief to say the least as otherwise you would go through periods of no eyebrows at all!
As we mentioned above, encouraging eyebrow growth means you need to stimulate and extend the ‘Anagen’ phase. Products like Lash & Brow Enhancer with WideLash™ by Agelyss that combines 5 patented ingredients work to strengthen the grip of the follicle on the hair shaft and stimulate and extend the anagen phase. Bottom line - this means you won’t have to wait months for your eyebrows to grow in.
But don’t wait for your brows to fall out! Read our 8 top ways that you may be responsible for damaging your eyebrows and what you can do to ensure that you do all you can do to maintain a healthy set of beautiful brows.
8 Ways You Are Damaging Your Eyebrows
1. Over Plucking
Picking up a pair of tweezers to your eyebrows always seems like a great idea...until it’s not. The obsessive nature and instant gratification of tweezing out stray eyebrow hairs can be a dangerous path to embark on. All it takes is one wrong pluck to make you look slightly surprised or worse, give you a bald patch.
Even worse, a noticeable mistake on one side of your face means you must correct the other side. This turns into a serious game of matching sides, which is akin to evening out a loaf of cake until you realize you’ve actually consumed it all. Or in this case, until you’re left hairless.
Another problem is when people are constantly plucking the same area over and over again. This can cause long-term damage to hair follicles until hair no longer grows back.
2. Diet and Nutrition
Growing full and healthy eyebrows is only possible if your body has the correct nutritional building blocks. For hair, that means enough protein for it to synthesize keratin. Additionally, Omega-3 fatty acids are needed to give hair a lustrous shine and Biotin will give your keratin infrastructure that added boost to promote hair growth .
If people stick to low fat diets or are deficient in vitamin B/Biotin and iron, it can lead to unhealthy, brittle and lifeless hair. In fact, one of the first symptoms of anorexia is actually hair loss.
3. Stress
Dealing with stress and anxiety can have a real impact on the hormones in your body, such as cortisol. A critical study has shown that when stress levels are high, cortisol is increased which then moves hair follicles into a resting Telogen phase. This is known as Telogen effluvium and will cause large amounts of hair to fall out by simply washing or brushing it. This affects hair throughout your body, including eyebrows.
4. Smoking
Smoking has been shown to affect hair growth in a number of ways. Not only can smoking damage the DNA of a hair follicle itself but it can also damage the dermal papilla (DP) cells which regulate the development and growth of hair follicles.
Additionally, by inhibiting oxygen consumption, Nicotine also diminishes the amount of oxygen that is delivered to the hair follicles and therefore may result in less eyebrow growth.
5. Thyroid Problems
Both hypothyroidism, an underactive thyroid, and hyperthyroidism, an overactive thyroid, can lead to dry and thinning hair. In severe cases, it can also lead to hair loss. Because hair growth cycles are not short, it can take months before it’s apparent. Additionally, some drugs which treat thyroid issues may also cause hair loss.
If you are experiencing other symptoms of thyroid problems such as overeating and sluggishness or weight loss and anxiety, your doctor may recommend a blood test to test your thyroid hormone levels.
6. Beauty Products
Are you filling in your eyebrows with a pencil or do you frequently brush on eyebrow gel? Both of these can actually be sabotaging your eyebrows. If you’re pressing down with your eyebrow pencil, you may be inadvertently disturbing a hair follicle and causing an eyebrow hair or two to fall out.
Furthermore, excessive amounts of eyebrow gel can cause hair to become dry and brittle and therefore fall out prematurely.
7. Infections
Infections can cause hair loss by either affecting the hair follicle, or the hair itself. Additionally, it may also be accompanied by an inflammation which causes people to scratch so vigorously that the hair falls out. Types of Infectious conditions which affect hair loss include those that are:
- Bacterial - such as Staphylococcus and syphilis.
- Viral - such as herpes and HIV.
- Fungal - such as ringworm.
How do you know if you’re losing your eyebrows due to an infection? It will usually be accompanied by redness, pain and even a fever.
8. Waxing
If there’s one take-away from this article, let it be a warning not to wax your own eyebrows. For those who haven’t yet attempted to do so, count yourselves lucky. Picture wax dripping everywhere and getting stuck to every surface in your bathroom. Imagine your hands, arms and clothing coated in sticky wax and needing to carefully manicure your brows. It’s a recipe for an absolute disaster. If you need further discouragement, the amount of YouTube videos of people waxing off an entire eyebrow by mistake should give you a clue as to why there is a school for cosmetology!
